Utilization of Advanced Molecular Techniques in Clinical Microbiology: Challenges and Solutions

From the 2023 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/27/2023)
Presented by Nicholas Moore, PhD, D(ABMM)

Next-generation sequencing dramatically revolutionized the clinical microbiology laboratory. This session will describe the use of advanced molecular techniques, strategies for their implementation, and understanding limitations and challenges surrounding result interpretation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits and clinical utility of sequencing a cultured isolate.
  • Explain the similarities and differences between metagenomic and genomic sequencing.
  • Explain the benefits and limitations of different sequence library approaches.

CE ACCREDITATION
ASCLS is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. ® Program.
