Focus on Public Health

From the 2023 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/29/2023)
Presented by Kyle Rodino, PhD, and Kyle Riding, PhD, MLS(ASCP)

Featuring two 30-minute sessions:
Clinical and Academic Lab Partnerships to Support Public Health
SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance was integral to the public health and epidemiologic response during the pandemic. Here we describe a clinical-academic collaboration to support public health and the broad impact of viral genomic surveillance.

Beyond the Bedside: The Laboratory Professionals’ Influence on Public Health
While medical laboratory professionals acknowledge our unique and important impact to a community’s health it is important we appreciate the broad influence our work has on foundational aspects of public health. This session will review the essential functions of public health, where and how the medical lab intersects with these functions, and explore several national public health programs that laboratory medicine is essential to.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize use-cases for viral genomic surveillance. Discuss the impact of genomic mutations on diagnostic assay performance. Give examples of using epidemiologic data to impact clinical decision-making.
  • List and describe the three core functions of public health. Discuss the influence or role laboratory medicine plays in each of the three core functions of public health. Describe the importance of laboratory medicine to key US public health programs.
