Focus on Transfusion and Transplant

From the 2023 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/29/2023)
Presented by Yan Zheng, PhD, MLS(ASCP)CM, and Jasmine Kendrick, MLS(ASCP)

Featuring two 30-minute presentations:
Cold-stored Platelets: Past, Present, and Future
This session will discuss the history, current research, and issues of cold-store platelets (CSP), as well as the ongoing clinicals trails when reinstating CSP in transfusion practice as compared to standard care.
From Listing to Transplant: A Day in HLA
With a person added to the transplant list every nine minutes, the testing provided by HLA laboratories is crucial in matching patients with a compatible donor. This presentation will explore some of the testing and analysis used in this process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize current clinical usage, policies, and regulations on cold-stored platelets (CSP). Discuss current evidence for the safety and efficacy of cold-stored platelets in transfusion practice. Discuss the ongoing clinical trials in determining the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of transfusing CSP as compared to standard care in actively bleeding patients.
  • Categorize the types of testing used for listing a patient on the waitlist. Summarize the principle of the most common tests offered in HLA labs. Interpret results used in pre and post-transplant monitoring.
