In this session, we will review current laboratory practices used in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and associated metabolic conditions. We will also explore new diagnostic tools and preventative therapies to reverse the epidemic trend in the US.


Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, the attendee will be able to:
  1. Generalize the recent trend in diagnosed diabetes mellitus cases, including contributing factors such as COVID.
  2. Review current classification of diabetes mellitus, American Diabetes Association’s diagnostic criteria and testing methods.
  3. Describe emerging diagnostic tools, therapeutics, and preventative treatments for pre-diabetes, diabetes and its related disorders.

    Minh Kosfeld is the program director for the Investigative and Medical Sciences program and an Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University where she teaches Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Laboratory Operations, and Urinalysis. She received her PhD from the University of Louisville and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Washington University. She is the current chair for the ASCLS Chemistry and Urinalysis Scientific Assembly. Until recently, she also worked at Cardinal Glennon Children hospital as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

  • Carol A. Rentas, PhD, MEd, MLS(ASCP) SCCM MBCM

    Dr. Rentas is an assistant professor in the Biomedical Laboratory Sciences department at George Washington University, teaching undergraduate and graduate students in Clinical Biochemistry, Immunohematology, Laboratory Management, and Research Methods. She has worked as a medical lab professional in military and civilian hospitals across the country before moving into education with more than 20 years of experience in laboratory science and education.
